La fiesta… this is my first Saturday in Madrid. I have heard crazy stories from Alex, Maya and Katie about Madrid. Tami, Maya, and Alex were recommending to me various places in Madrid to hang out and party. To be really honest, it is extremely expensive to party in Madrid. It cost 10 Euros to get in clubs, and some drinks in the club would cost around 15 Euros. It is just crazy. But being an exchange student, partying is part of the culture. Not knowing Madrid that well yet, I thought of exploring the La Latina neighborhood, where there are tons of bars. I liked the scene and the atmosphere but I did not have company. Therefore, I went back to my apartment to go out with my roommate and some other girls from my program. While entering into the elevator of my apartment, I bumped into my neighbor Rachel who is an American exchange student in Spain as well. She invited me to hang out with her friends in a bar. Without giving much thought, I agreed to it. On our way to meet her friend, this promoter from The Fame club approached us and told us that we could get a free shot if we were to follow him to bar. We agreed and got our free shot. It was 11.45pm and the dance was dead. The party don’t start till around 2pm. I guess the free shot was to get people in and make things a life in the club. I really liked the shot they were served to us. It was fruity and extremely sweet. I couldn’t taste the alcohol.
It was time for bar hunting after meeting her friends. Rachel’s friend John knew a few bars and we went round hunting for bars. It can be a little frustrating every time when we like a bar the place is too crowded. When we finally found a place that was cheap where a beer cost 1.50 Euros, and a Mojito cost only 5 Euros, and a jug of sangria cost only 6 Euros. However, the place was kind of sketchy. It looks like where you would find drugs trying to get their fix. It was decorated and smelled that way, but it is actually a hookah bar. After 5 minutes in that bar we decided to leave because I guess most of the girls felt uncomfortable. I felt uncomfortable too being a guy.
We finally settled for an expensive bar where a beer cost 4 Euros. After finishing our beer, we went to the next bar down the street for some Sangria. It cost about 12 Euros but we split it among 7 people. By 2.30am we felt kind of tired and left. I didn’t go straight back to the apartment. I offered to walk this person to the bus station, which is 10 minutes away from my place. I had to, if not she would be all alone and I felt that it was kind of dangerous for her to be alone during the wee hours of the morning. Rachel and I walked her friend up and down the street near the Gran Via metro station for about 45 minutes because it was her friend’s first time taking the bus. I guess Rachel was tired and finally told her friend that she could always take the cab and figure it out the next time.
If you are wondering what kind of person Rachel is, she reminds me of Allie Wong except that this is a tone down version of Allie. Hahahaha… No offence Allie. It is just that Rachel reminded me of you. :P
